Guinea, Japan and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) have signed the Kennedy Round (KR) 2026 Agreement, reaffirming their commitment to improving food security and nutrition for vulnerable communities across the country.
The agreement was signed on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at the Ministry of Planning, International Cooperation and Development in Conakry during a ceremony chaired by Ismaël Nabé, Minister of Planning, International Cooperation and Development.
The event was attended by Kato Ryuichi, Ambassador of Japan to Guinea, Cyridion Usengumuremyi, WFP Representative and Country Director in Guinea, along with senior government officials and development partners.
Under the agreement, the Government of Japan will provide 300 million Japanese yen, equivalent to approximately 16.3 billion Guinean francs (GNF), to support WFP programmes over the next two years.
The funding will strengthen school feeding and nutrition initiatives in the regions of Boké, Kankan, Faranah, N’Zérékoré and Conakry, benefiting an estimated 52,140 vulnerable people.
Among the beneficiaries, 36,390 schoolchildren will receive nutritious daily meals aimed at improving school attendance, concentration and academic performance.
The programme will also provide nutritional assistance to 15,750 vulnerable people, including children under the age of five, pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as people living with HIV and tuberculosis.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Minister Ismaël Nabé highlighted the importance of investing in people as the foundation of national development.
“A country is not built solely on its natural resources. Its greatest strength lies in the quality of its human capital,” he said.
According to the Ministry of Planning, International Cooperation and Development, the partnership is fully aligned with the objectives of the Simandou 2040 development strategy, particularly its priorities in education, health and human capital development.
Through this new agreement, Guinea, Japan and the WFP reaffirm their shared commitment to improving food security, supporting vulnerable populations and contributing to sustainable socio-economic development across the country.
